Personally, I think virtual roof advertising should be thoroughly illegal.

Recently, movie companies have been paid by advertisers to replace the real ads in Times Square with the ads from their companies.

The companies that advertise there pay good money for that ad space.

Virtual rooftop advertising would be equally sleazy. If I owned a business, I'd be very angry if a company could charge me for the right for people to see my rooftop as it is, with my advertisement intact.

What is a competitor was willing to pay Google to display -their- ad on -my- roof?

Satillite maps are supposed to be a true, unadultered image of the earth. Lets keep this new frontier pristine, and not clutter it with junk.

Well, why not "virtual roof advertising" instead of the real thing? After all, the ads only get viewed through Google maps or some other kind of mapping software.

That way one wouldn't need to paint the roof, simply send the ad to the new "Google MapAds" (quote me on this after they use the brand). You could even use Google AdWords engine to get the ads for a given search query. Possibilities on this are limitless, just imagine.

This is simply another form of context sensitive advertisement, this time graphical not textual.

UPDATE: Well, seems that roof advertising has already some nice examples, today Bip just sent me an example here in portugal: the rooftop of IKEA in Lisbon.

Now the only thing missing is the business model! ;)
