Well, SHiFT isn’t happening this year… and yeah, believe me no one’s more sad about it than myself, well may two other crazy guys! But we couldn’t stand still so we’re helping SAPO in an astonishing event:

and trust me, we’re all aiming high, as high as we’re allowed to get all the Portuguese developers an amazing event, party and mash-ups contest!
The event is obviously inspired in the Yahoo Hackday which totally contagious us back in May in London when some of us managed to attend it. Since not all Portuguese can afford traveling as far, SAPO decided to recreate it!
We’re trying to include everyone that wishes to go, but since the seats are limited, I urge everyone who praises for his/her geekiness without shame to register at:
Time as come for all of you geeks in the closet to come out, so I really hope we can all meet up in November in Lisbon!!

Yup, it’s true, september is going to be a hell of a month here at Lisbon, we already had scheduled one conference (SHiFT, which I’m helping organize), one Barcamp, and now, Damian is comming to Lisbon for a Perl Best Practices Workshop.

I hope I can make it, hearing Damian live isn’t something we can miss, so I’m eager to register and take part of it. . If you’d like to know more or even register yourself, check the workshop page.

Bricolage, the perl open-source content management system we use at SAPO for boosting up some of our sites (like it’sHomepage, the help/support site, two major national newspapers:DN and JN, etc.) have reached an important stage with a new version just released today! As you can attest by reading the offical announcement, there were a lot of improvements and house cleaning, To me, as bricolage system administrator and developer they are a few, very important ones, I would like to summarize here…
- A revamped user interface: the old interface had major usability problems, so it’s in my opinion one of the most important developments. The new user interface, is XHTML compliant and now fully supports CSS styling, it now uses much more screen area than the older interface base on tables. The new interface is also powered by javascript, allowing some functions to be made using Ajax technology and allowing for instance the edition of documents without reloads.
- Bricolage, now supports PHP templating, thanks to the PHP::Interpreter, that allows you to use the PHP5 interpreter from within the Perl interpreter, giving developers easy access between them. This feature was made possible thanks to the support given by SAPO on this development as an open-source sponsor.
- LDAP Authentication is now support, but most important is that to allow LDAP, Bricolage now supports a pluggable authentication allowing it’s developers to built and use they’re preferred authentication methods.
Seems also, an unfortunately for me (heheh) that there was also room left for some normalization, so some of the names changed, but I actually think might pay the effort of converting our templates and scripts, since the old namespace used had lots of tricky things and could became quite confusing at some point.
Well for all the effort, congrats David of this successful release!

We arrived Braga yesterday, after a 4 hour drive from Lisbon, fortunally all went well, well almost everything, at some point we were suposed to stop at Mealhada for having dinner, but by the time the highway way out came up we as driving at high speed on the left lane, so we had to stop a bit up north at Aveiro for dinner.
I’ve been finisihing my presentation for this afternoon up until late, so I didn’t get much sleep. Which might explain why I have forgotten part of the recording stuff back at the hotel, so i’ll have to manage a way and time to get back there sometime over the morning, or no podcasts at all!
José opened the YAPC::EU, we was my colleague at log, and ever since a friend, I must tell you he is indeed one of the most funny presenters I’ve met, and he doesn’t leave that to any other else, he just presented us with the most funny openning session I’ve attended for quite sometime.
Larry Wall is speaking at this precise momment. My first impression (since it’s my first time listenning to him live) is much more richer than I might already expect! He’s covering some of perl’s communty aspects, and the second part of the presentation being a bit more technical, talking a bit about the development of the future release of Perl.

Sapo, as an official sponsor of this year YAPC, just issued a press release about the conference, if you know portuguese you can read it here.
We’re heading for Braga in a few hours!
And I’ve just teamed up with Sebastião for recording the maximum number of sessions we can, and if we’re allowed to actually record them. All of the recording material will end up at archive.org, but more on that will follow…

For those you might haven’t noticed, this year European YAPC is happening in Braga, Portugal and I just received an email from the organizers stating that Larry Wall, Perl’s author is already in Portugal! This sounds to me light an important ingredient for an important YAPC! I’ve been in YAPC::EU in Amesterdam, together with ZéNuno, and it was excellent, but Larry was missing for some personal problem, and things weren’t the same. So I have big expectations for this years YAPC::EU. Let’s wait and see!
I’m going to try to record some podcasts of the presentations there: 1º if I’m allowed, and 2º If i managed to have time. I would also like to steal some might words from Larry itself, hehehe but I’ll make my day just by meeting him. After all Perl just safed my day too many times!

The talk presentation I proposed for YAPC::EU this year has just been accepted!
Now the only thing missing are the slides! He! He! But i already have a draft to start with, so no major stress there…
