RailsConf Europe 2007

UPDATE: check my (unreviewed) notes here.

Rails Conf Europe 2007If all goes as planned, from Monday to Thursday I’ll be at the RailsConf Europe in Berlin.

For people wondering what I’m talking about:

Ruby On Rails is a programming framework for building database-driven websites which is becoming increasingly popular among programmers, mainly because its easy and yields results quickly, requires minimal configuration and project start-up overhead. Rails is written in Ruby, an object-oriented scripting language with roots in Perl, Lisp, and Smalltalk (2 of my personal favorites out of 3!).

So if you’re around Berlin during these days, please send me a mail and will meet up!

For all the friends and Rubists who couldn’t make it to Berlin, I’ll going to cover it here on the blog, (in Portuguese primarily) as much as I can! ;)

Web2Expo Berlin

The Web2Expo Berlin Tracks have been unleashed. Just by looking at the tracks, I can already guess that’s going to be a very special and unique conference in terms of tech conferences around Europe. Web2Expo will cover five different tracks:Web2Expo Berlin

The tracks session list is so large and covers so many interesting subjects, that the hard job is going to be choosing which ones to attend to. A special note for which I’m really glad is that we’ve managed to get some portuguese representations in there: Fred (WeBreakStuff) is going to moderate the panel “Moving from 1.0 to 2.0: Philosophies and Structures for Change” and I’ll be presenting “Conversational Design“:

Once we progress from the User Centered Design to Community Centered Design we’ll need to identify and gather a similar set of best practices regarding it’s Community design. This presentation collects more or less the key features and interactions that a successful Community should display in order to empower their users and facilitate conversation between its members.

This presentation aims to be a bridge between Usability Best Practices and Community Centered Design, a practice that can maximize the networking and crowd effect under online user communities.

Web2Expo will also include a Foo/BarCamp style event that’s being organized by Nicole Simon entitled Web2open which will blend pre-scheduled content with an open grid where the attendees can fill in sessions they either want to discuss or present themselves. It certainly going to be a unique space to connect with other attendees, learn more about elements of Web 2.0, and share their knowledge and experiences.

So if not before, see you in Berlin, next November! ;)

BARCAMP Portugal 2007

UPDATE: I took some pictures during the Barcamp and posted them on my Flickr account.

BarCamp PortugalJust a quick reminder that the second Barcamp Portugal is taking place this weekend in Coimbra! The hard work of organizing it was once again the work of the WeBreakStuff team, so a special thanks to them for it!

For those of you guys that never took place in one, don’t let this one pass you by, the Barcamp are particular interesting for networking. Barcamp’s informality is well renowned and the fact that there’s no prior schedule or program kind of leaves us, the attendees, all somehow responsible for it’s success!

I think the original ground rule of the Barcamp was PARTICIPATE, meaning everyone attending had to present about something, doesn’t had to technical or meaningfull either, but everyone had to present something. Knowing the portuguese quarter a little bit, I’ll know we’re certain to find the usual suspects speaking, but I take this opportunity to reinforce the open invitation for participation, I personally I would love to hear less of the usual suspects, where I include myself! ;)

If you’re interested, but nevertheless can’t afford to be there for some reason, please refer to the BarCamp Wiki page, there you’ll find all the updated information, presentations and scary pictures that took place there.

Next Stop: London!

english

City of London

I’m getting excited by the minute! I haven’t been in London since 99, I still have some great memories from The City, but I’m more than eager to actually settle my feet there again!

This time, the trip isn’t entirely on vacation as was the first time, my schedule is a bit overwhelming actually! I’m attending this weekend’s second London BarCamp and during the course of next week, I’ll be at FOWA. Somehow between all that I’m planning to actually meet-up some friends and have a drink in one of the many great London Bars. AH! and of course, my wife PatrĂcia is also expecting me to join her in some some sightseeing too, So let’s see how all turns out!! :)

If anyone’s interested, I’m in London from this saturday, up until next saturday night (I’m actually leaving on sunday 25th early morning).

I’m kind of curious how the London BarCamp is going to be. I have only participated in one Barcamp so far, the Portuguese one in Coimbra last year, but judging from all the affluence expected on this one, it’s going to … let’s say it this way… different! This year Barcamp is sponsored by BT,BBC Backstage, O’Reilly and Torchbox, and takes place in FOWA - Future of Web Apps starts next tuesday, and it’s schedule looks really promising! And from all the speakers, I’m especially interested, on the following ones:

At the end of FOWA’s second day, there’s still time, for the Geek Dinner with Tara Hunt and Chris Messina, where I’m hoping I can not only meet them in person, but also, invite them to come to Lisbon some time soon! ;)

And finally, I’m not entirely sure if I did managed to register since it has limited seats, but I might just be able to attend Google’s University Sessions on Thursday, and have a first hand insight on how to use Google Gadgets, Google Maps and, of course, Google Search. :)

I’ll try to post as often as I’m allowed with news/updates from both the trip and the events, but since I won’t have permanent net connection during the time in London, I’m not entirely sure if I’m able to post anything along those days.

See you in London! ;)
